Quantifying Inorganic Selenium in Selenium Yeast

Selenium (Se) is a crucial nutrient for the well-being of all animals, including swine. Its deficiency can lead to various diseases and reduced performance in pigs during all production phases. Organic Se in the form of Selenomethionine (SeMet) or Hydroxy-Selenomethionine (OH-SeMet) is the most efficient source of Se and the only source that can be stored in the body for use during stressful times.

Selenium Yeast (SeYeast), a commonly used organic selenium supplement, was developed to deliver Organic Se/SeMet to the animal and due to the nature of its production process, it contains a variety of different selenium species, including both organic and inorganic forms.

However, quantifying some of these Se species has been a challenge in the past. Inorganic Elemental Se could previously be detected in SeYeast products but there was no analytical method to quantify it until recently. With the development of the analytical method for the quantification of Elemental Se, it is now clear that SeYeast contains more inorganic Se than previously thought which can have impacts on the antioxidant status of your animals.
